Latino Memphis Inc's Fundraiser:

Team Fund-Raise Your Hand!

THE STORY:

Latino Memphis wants to thank all of our friends, in helping us reach our goal of $30,000 by June 30, 2016, to support our strongest program: Abriendo Puertas.

About the Challenge

Abriendo Puertas or “Opening Doors” is one of Latino Memphis' strongest programs – providing mentoring and leadership development to high school students like Frankie Paz and Farida Flores to help them fulfill their dream of going to college. The Assisi Foundation, a valued supporter of Abriendo Puertas, has challenged us to raise $30,000 from new donors by June 30, 2016. Your gift will have a direct impact on the lives of our students, the majority of whom will be the first in their family to attend college.

About Latino Memphis

For 20 years, we have been an agent of change for Latino Memphians, empowering individuals, families and communities throughout the Bluff City. It all started in 1995 when a group of dedicated local leaders gathered to discuss the needs of the growing Latino community. The idea evolved into a MIFA program and “Latino Memphis ” was born. In 1999, Latino Memphis Conexion, now known as Latino Memphis, spread its wings and became an organization of its own.

Today, more than two decades since its beginning, that pioneering spirit, and passionate commitment has made us the go-to organization for issues impacting the Hispanic community in the Mid-South. Latino Memphis has since become the largest Latino-serving nonprofit in West Tennessee, serving thousands of clients each year and advancing awareness of the many issues impacting the Latino community. Today, we remain more committed than ever to raising the voice of Latinos in our region and working toward building a vibrant middle class.

Our Mission

We assist Latinos in the Greater Memphis area by connecting, collaborating and advocating for health, education and justice.

Frankie Paz, Abriendo Puertas Alumni

Frankie Paz is the first in his family to graduate from high school, and thanks to Latino Memphis, the first to attend college.

As Frankie neared graduation, he feared his immigration status could keep him from pursuing a degree. In Tennessee, DREAMers, or youth who were brought to the U.S. as children, must pay out-of-state tuition at public universities. He got involved with Latino Memphis through Abriendo Puertas, but it was challenging finding a school his family could afford. Even with his outstanding student record, he did not qualify for federal financial aid and was facing out-of-state tuition rates three times higher than that of his peers.

Then the summer after Frankie graduated, Latino Memphis had life-changing news. Frankie was a candidate for Christian Brothers University’s Latino Student Success program, which offers scholarships to non-FAFSA eligible students.

Frankie is now in his second year at CBU. After graduating, Frankie plans to stay in Memphis and use his education to give back to his city, Latino Memphis, and everyone that supported him and made it possible for his dream to come true.

“The connections that Latino Memphis provided and the willingness that Christian Brothers University had to accept me and others like me is something that I am thankful for. Had it not been for Latino Memphis in the first place, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to realize my goal of going to college. It’s something that I didn’t even think I was going to fulfill, and now it is becoming real and I really, really appreciate Latino Memphis for that.” – Frankie Paz
