OU Build-A-Thon 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 20, 2016
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Oct 21, 2016
FUNDRAISER SET UP DEADLINE: Oct 20, 2016
Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped 6.8 million people improve their living conditions through building and renovating housing. These low-cost homes are built by volunteers, and then provided to those in need with affordable monthly mortgage payments with no interest. In Oklahoma specifically, most of the people who are helped are either displaced from their homes due to severe weather or due to economic downturns. Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity works in the Moore/Norman area to help provide this housing, and is currently working on a 10 home series in Moore for those affected by the 2013 tornadoes.
We at OU Habitat for Humanity partner with Cleveland County Habitat in order to promote builds and fundraise to help offset some of the costs of building homes. One of our primary events for fundraising is Build-a-Thon—on Thursday, October 13th, groups from across OU’s campus will come out to build a “home” out of recyclable material. This represents the substandard living conditions that those helped by Habitat are coming out of, as many may be homeless and living on the streets (or with family). Each group will fundraise out of their house, so you can vote for your favorite by donating to them, either online on CrowdRise or directly to the members themselves. At 5:30 PM, there will be an ending ceremony with live music, food, and activities, where we will announce who garnered the most donations and the winners of several other categories, including Most Spirited and Best Shack.
Last year, we raised $5,000 during Build-a-Thon, and this year our goal is $10,000. With your generous help and support, we can help build up Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity and provide more homes to more deserving families.
