In 2013, I made up half the duo that made up the #26miles26girls campaign, which concluded with my best friend Erin Leigh Patterson finishing the New York Marathon (NYCM). When I first stepped out of the Brooklyn train station to cheer her on, I knew I had to be a part of this 26.2 mile party one day.
I tried to join the party in 2014, 2015, 2016, AND 2017...with no luck through the lottery system. Then in April of 2017, I got a miracle phone call. After four tries, I had my entry AT LAST.
During the course of the "26 miles for 26 girls" campaign in 2013, I was challenged and streched to beyond what I thought possible. I learned the vital role that girls' education can play in impoverished communities across the globe. She's the first is a non-profit organization which is helping girls in low-income countries be the first in their families to graduate.
This year, I am raising $4000 for She's the First, which is equivalent to four years' tuition for Hilaria, a She's the First scholar in Peru! Four years of education for my four years of (not-so-patient) waiting to obtain entry into my very first New York Marathon!
When she's not at school, she lives with her parents and five siblings. Her father is a farmer who also raises alpacas (so cool!), and her mother is a weaver who sells the items she creates (again...so cool!). When Hilaria is at school, she loves to study, especially math!
The smallest amount can make a huge difference! Will you consider donating to help Hilaria be the first in her family to graduate?
