Over 6 Million tons of marine debris and over 600,000 tons of lost and abandoned fishing gear, enters our oceans every year.
It is estimated that over 300,000 Whales and Dolphins die every year due to entanglements in derelict fishing gear. Hundreds of thousands of seals, turtles and seabirds can be added to that figure. Especially when you add in the deaths attributed to plastic ingestion.
In a perfect world, humans would stop using our oceans as the global sewer. Until that happens, the American Reef Coalition patrols 1,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean and miles of remote beaches in the Mid-Pacific retrieving and disposing of abandoned fishing gear and marine debris.
Every day spent removing marine debris from our oceans, reefs and beaches saves countless lives of innocent marine mammals, sea turtles, fish and seabirds.
Funding is needed to continue this mission.
