Our Veterans' Voices
Organized by: Anthony Walker
Public misconceptions about PTSD continue to be a barrier for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in finding long-term employment and leading healthy, productive lives. Our Veterans' Voices is an organization that will educate the general public, corporations, and educational institutions about PTSD and veteran issues. Hi. My name is Anthony Walker. I served in the U.S. Army for 8 years and did four overseas tours, including 3 in Afghanistan. I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2013 and since then I have been working to understand and deal with my PTSD. I have encountered many people in my daily life that think I'm violent, unreliable, or "crazy" because I have PTSD. I want to work to counter these views by creating educational training modules for corporate hiring managers and human resources staff, as well as by establishing the website TheTruthAboutPTSD.org, which will tell veterans' stories in their own words. In a survey of corporate hiring managers, over half said they weren't sure if an employee with PTSD would bring violence into the workplace, despite the fact that no medical literature supports the view that people suffering from PTSD are more likely to be violent than others. These are the kind of misconceptions that need to be addressed to ensure veteran's are not discriminated against in the hiring process. The money I'm requesting will be used to hire a small team including a consulting medical professional, a website engineer, and an analyst. Together we will get TheTruthAboutPTSD.org off the ground, market it, and develop an initial web-based PTSD training module for corporate hiring managers. I will work as a liaison with corporations to have our training products integrated into HR training curricula. I am already working with a close friend and mentor who is a corporate executive. If you have any questions, want to learn more, or see a more in-depth description of my proposed organization, I'm available almost anytime. I'm not sure how this site is set up and if you can send me messages or not, but I will figure out a way to be available for anyone that is curious or that wants to make any suggestions. Thanks.
