Ousmane Niang is a supervisor at Tostan, a human rights NGO operating in West and East Africa. For over ten years, Ousmane has worked with communities in Senegal to educate them on human rights and to give them the practical skills they need to lift themselves out of poverty. He has never shied away from difficult topics - gender-based violence, female genital cutting, family planning and the unequal division of domestic labor, to name a few - and his work has radically altered the lives of hundreds of Senegalese women and girls for the better. Within his communities, Ousmane is an important model for the way men can become engaged as allies to women in promoting universal human rights.
Sadly, Ousmane's work has been stalled by his battle with kidney failure, as his need for dialysis twice a week means that he can no longer travel to remote villages. This fund has been set up to help Ousmane, who has no health insurance and no longer has the means to pay his medical bills while supporting his four children. He is on the government list for free dialysis but the process is long and could take another year.
