Out Side In is an equine assisted psychotherapy facility located in Grand Haven, Michigan, providing programs to assist families and veterans who are struggling with the affects of trauma, abuse, anxiety and depression. What sets Out Side In apart from similar facilities is offering treatment provided by licensed master's level providers using rescued "off the track" thoroughbred horses destined for slaughter.
Equine assisted psychotherapy has been proven highly successful, particularly in those described as treatment resistant and where other avenues of therapy have been exhausted.
The Veterans program, Heroes for Horses, offers Veterans who are suffering from the effects of their service, namely PTSD, anxiety and depression, an opportunity to find a place and a purpose once they return home.
"It's not easy at all, they don't teach you how to survive after you get out." - Chris, Veteran serving throughout the Middle-East and currently in the Heroes for Horses program.
The Veterans in each group are paired up with a rescued Off Track Thoroughbred (OTTB), that otherwise would have been sold to slaughter, and together they work to over come obstacles. The Veterans find a connection and sense of peace in working through their troubles with an animal that like them had a "job" and then was generally abandoned when they had finished serving their purpose.
Veterans in turn work with the horses to help them rebuild their trust in people, and give them opportunities to learn different skills out side of the racetrack. Together they both learn to trust again, to find a new purpose in the larger world and to build upon their strengths as they're rediscovered in the program.
"I can't believe that a horse can help as much as a trained professional." - Chuck, Vietnam Veteran and currently in the Heroes for Horses program.
A couple statistics:
A veteran dies as the result of suicide every 65 minutes in the United States.
Over 10,000 horses are sent to slaughter every year because they no longer have promising careers at the racetrack.
The beauty of Out Side In is with the care and guidance of licensed therapists, Veterans and OTTBs are able to find a new start in life. Out Side In embraces the similarities between those who are seeking a way to heal and horses in need of a renewed purpose, and is committed to the making a connection that is beneficial to both.
No Veteran is turned away for inability to pay. OSI strives to provide their services to anyone in the community who can benefit.
My goal is to raise $5,760 through the Art Van Charity Challenge. That's enough to run the Heroes for Horses program for four Veterans.
To put this in perspective:
$120 will pay for one session for a Veteran
$1,440 will pay to send a Veteran through the entire program
That said - ANY amount helps. Get a group of 4 together and you each pay $30 for one session or $360 a piece to put a Veteran through the entire program.
OSI is a 501(c)3 organization and any contributions are tax deductible.
