This summer, Free to Run is bringing together female athletes from across Afghanistan to share their love of sports in one of the safest and most beautiful regions in the country! This is the first time that cyclists, climbers, runners and hikers will come together to inspire and educate each other.
I believe in the power of sports to change lives for the better. Sports have the ability to teach self-confidence, leadership skills and teamwork. More importantly, in a place like Afghanistan where women are pushed to the margins, outdoor sports help them to reclaim public space. By doing sports outdoors, it helps to change perceptions of women and reinforces that they are equal, active members of society.
I am shamelessly using my 34th birthday to fundraise to cover some of the costs of the week. We are aiming to fly out athletes from two different provinces of Afghanistan (location withheld for security reasons). The funds raised here will go towards flight costs, accommodation for out-of-towners, transportation costs in the area of the event, some sports equipment, food, and logistical fees. I will be joining in the event as well, along with some runners from Hong Kong and the US (at their own cost).
This is a truly unique chance to make a tangible and positive impact. Please help us achieve our goal :) If you have any questions, email me at email@example.com. Details of dates and locations will not be public.
