On Sunday, June 25, I will join my BWH colleagues who will run or walk in the 2017 Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) 10K road race to support The Outreach Program with Indian Health Service (IHS). The Outreach Program Team has been generously sponsored by MFS Investment Management, a global investment manager based in Boston.
The mission of the BWH’s Outreach Program with Indian Health Service is to improve the health status of the American Indian population by matching the critical needs of the IHS hospitals in our collaboration with the expertise of the clinical volunteers from the BWH. Through our faculty volunteer efforts, patients living on the Navajo reservation are receiving care that may not have been previously available, and the capacity of IHS physicians to treat both common and complex conditions has expanded significantly. The other components of the Outreach Program are remote teaching through video conferencing and hosting IHS physicians in Boston to experience cutting edge medicine and training within BWH.
Since the program’s inception in 2008, BWH faculty have made over 170 onsite visits, led more than 135 remote teaching conferences and mentored 16 IHS clinicians here in Boston. Together we are making a difference in the lives of this marginalized and often forgotten community and helped improve the clinical practices of the dedicated and talented clinicians overseeing their care.
Thank you for your support.
