THE STORY:

CHRIS ATWOOD FOUNDATION INC wrote -

We are experiencing the worst opioid epidemic in the nation's history with  overdose now killing more Americans than car accidents.  A medication called naloxone reverses opioid overdose, but few who need it have it. Because of this, in 2013 we lost 24,000 lives that might have been saved with naloxone.

We are running a 200 mile day and night relay race to raise funds to provide training and access to naloxone for at-risk individuals and their loved ones.  We need your help. Please donate whatever you are able, and share this page with others

The statistics are scary... but they aren't just numbers. They are real people, like our sweet, funny, and handsome Chris, many of whom desperately want to get better, but suffer from a debilitating addiction that many people say they deserve.

One thing is clear - this is no longer someone else's problem.  It's happening right in our backyard.  You might not always see it, because the stigma of this disease makes many suffer in silence, but you do know someone who has been affected by it.

If we are going to stop losing lives, especially young ones, we must all do something.

What We are Doing

The Chris Atwood Foundation is working to combat this opioid crisis by spreading awareness, education, and access to a life-saving overdose antidote called Naloxone.

Naloxone works safely and effectively in as little as 3 minutes to reverse an otherwise fatal overdose from prescription pain killers or heroin.  Some states, including VA, have passed new laws allowing anyone to carry it, but there are still significant barriers to getting the medication into the hands of those who need it - like the recently doubled cost, and training requirements.

In the beginning of June, The Chris Atwood Foundation held the area's first layperson Naloxone training class where 25 people, mostly family members of someone using opioids, learned how to reverse opioid overdose, and with your help we will reach many more. We believe that everyone who has exposure to opioids should have this medication on hand just like someone with an allergy would carry an epi-pen.

Please help us in our fight to stop opioids from claiming more lives by donating whatever your budget allows.
