In 2014, Outrun the Sun launched the largest one-day sun safety initiative ever established in the United States in partnership with the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Each year more than 300,000 fans attending the historic Indianapolis 500 receive sunscreen and ultraviolet wristbands. Race fans also have the opportunity to see and hear sun safety public service announcements featuring Verizon IndyCar Series driver and OTS spokesperson, Josef Newgarden. Thousands more are reached through messages broadcast on the IMS Radio Network. Funding from the John Gongos Melanoma Education Fund helped launch this program.
OTS partners with Girl Scout councils across America to provide the Outrun the Sun 'Sun Safety Patch' to help young scouts learn about skin cancer prevention. Outrun the Sun also works with outher organizations including the Boy Scouts of America-Crossroads Council, YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, Indiana University School of Medicine, The Weather Channel and more to foster sun safety awareness among children and adults nationwide.
