BENEFITING: OUTWARD BOUND PORTLAND
Outward Bound's Washington base camp in Mazama WA is facing a critical time. They weren't able to open this year but if they can raise $100,000- $150,000 they can reopen next year, and stay open for following years. The central organization known as Outward Bound USA shut down due to financial reasons, and the running of the wilderness schools was given to different regions. The Northwest Outward Bound School is now in charge of- among other things- the 2 wilderness schools in Oregon and Washington. Last year they made the difficult decision to open one base camp and definitely make it happen, rather than open 2 and possibly go bankrupt. However the student turn out this year for the one base camp was extremely good. All spots where a student paid full price for the course were filled up (Outward Bound is a non profit organization, it also gives out many scholarships for it's programs). This would imply that if the second base camp (Mazama) were to open, it also would have a good student turn out.
The kinds of courses the Mazama base camp ran were sea kayaking/ mountaineering and youth canoe/ backpack. They were the only base camp that ran courses in the San Juan islands which are incredible. My family is lower middle class and I was granted a scholarship to do a 50 day course. I had to write an essay and show some documents, and I was able to go on my course for about $3000 instead of $6000. I'm just explaining this because this course was one of the best experiences of my life. It helped me quit smoking cigarettes as one of my personal goals that was developed through my skills learned on course. Afterwards I worked as a logistics coordinator one year with them and next year I'm going to intern with them and begin taking courses out as an instructor. I am continuing down this path my course started me on, but just one course can be an incredible part of someones life. Outward Bound is a non profit organization that doesn't do much, if any, advertising but it has a lot to offer. Please help by donating money, and consider telling people to check out Outward Bound, and checking out a course yourself.
