EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
In May 1985 I was born- the 3rd grand daughter for my paternal grandmother ("Mimi"). In that same month, Mimi was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She had noticed that her abdomen was swollen and had other vague symptoms. The cancer, which originated in her ovaries, had already spread to other tissues and her liver.
After 1 1/2 years of treatment, our Mimi joined the angels. She lives on in stories from family and friends, the best cherry cheesecake recipe ever, and rose bushes that are still outside of my dad's childhood home.
30 years later this story is still repeated more often then it should.
All disease knows no limits and touches us all- my hope is that by supporting this cause the course of ovarian cancer can be altered with the advancements in medicine that have changed the course of so many other diseases over the past few decades.
On May 1, 2016 I will run the Pittsburgh 1/2 marathon in the honor of Mimi and my family who were blessed enough to know her and others who wish we had known her.
