THE STORY:

Thanks for your support for our launch/birthday campaign! With your help, Over the Moon Project is now a brand new registered non-profit organization.

Please visit the organization's new official CrowdRise page to make a tax deductible donation directly to the 501c3 organization. Of course, all funds collected on this site for the launch/birthday campaign will be transfered to Over the Moon Project as well, now that all our paperwork is in order.

Thanks again for your support!

Gillian and Juliet have the same birthday! We also have a dream of helping all the girls in Juliet's village attend school. Unfortunately, girls in rural Uganda are often unable to attend school during "that time of the month" because they don't have access to menstrual sanitary supplies. That means they fall behind in school and have no chance of making it to high school or college. We want to eliminate that barrier and you can help by donating today!

Thank you so much for helping make our birthday wish come true!

ABOUT US:

Gillian and Juliet met through Georgetown's Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program. We quickly learned that we share not only a birthday, but also a vision for empowering women around the world and eliminating educational barriers like menstrual absenteeism. We are two Tauruses on a mission and you can help make it happen!

Juliet grew up in Lira, Uganda, where she attended Akiya Primary School. She has gone on to great success in her career as a magistrate judge in Kampala and is currently a Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa Fellow at Georgetown. Several years ago, Juliet visited her school and saw how many girls are impacted by menstrual absenteeism. She began providing mentorship and aid to girls there. She has been able to provide a limited number of disposable menstrual pads to mitigate the problem of menstrual absenteeism, but her individual reach is limited. Through this project, we will be able to provide environmentally sound, reusable pads along with sex education and gender empowerment workshops to all the girls at Akiya Primary School in Lira.

We are also very excited to have the expertise and enthusiasm of international education consultant, Catie Corbin, to help make this project happen as a member of our board of directors. Thank you, Catie!

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The goal of this project is to improve educational outcomes for girls in Lira, Uganda, by reducing menstrual absenteeism and increasing students’ self-confidence through the delivery of high-quality reusable menstrual sanitary products (pads) in conjunction with sex education, gender empowerment workshops, and mentorship.

Although Uganda has a constitutional mandate to provide free universal primary and secondary education, Ugandan girls still face many barriers to education, including domestic work, farming, and family obligations. Another significant barrier to school attendance for many Ugandan girls is menstruation, which often results in absences from school—a phenomenon known as menstrual absenteeism. These absences accumulate and cause girls to fall behind, thereby reducing their educational achievement and limiting their chances of completing secondary and post-secondary education. This project aims to alleviate some of the main causes of menstrual absenteeism—lack of reliable menstrual sanitary supplies, shame, and stigma.

This campaign is currently classified as a "personal fundraiser" because Over the Moon Project didn't exist when we set this up and our non-profit status is still pening with CrowdRise. Your donations will provide the seed money to launch our project and start our non-profit! Thank you for your support.
