Help us send 5 Campers to OWL Camp!
OWL (Oklahomans Without Limits) Camp is a free, week-long summer camp for children ages 8-18 who are blind or vision impaired. OWL Camp began in 2000, and has grown to 30-40 visually-impaired campers each July. Each camper is teamed with a sighted peer counselor who provides encouragement, assistance, and friendship.
Camp activities are carefully planned and designed to encourage collaboration, improve confidence, self-esteem, and independence, and challenge societal and self-imposed limits through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities in an accessible environment. The focus is on capability rather than disability.
The 2014 OWL Camp will be held July 21-25, 2014 on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma. The camp is open to 8-18 year olds with a visual impairment. NewView raises funds to cover the costs for the camp and no fee is charged to vision impaired children to ensure that every child has the chance to participate.
Visually impaired children and youth rarely, if ever, have the chance to experience many of the activities offered during this camp in their daily lives. For many, it is their first time away from home and certainly their first summer camp experience. The campers’ sighted buddies see vision loss as nothing more than a difference that can be accommodated. This helps the campers to enjoy the thrill of camp and the comfort of feeling normal while hanging out with others their age that are visually impaired.
With your generous support, NewView Oklahoma can provide blind and visually impaired youth statewide with an unforgettable camp experience that will prepare them to live happy, independent and productive lives!
For every $1,000 we raise, we can send another blind or visually impaired child to OWL Camp 2014!
