BENEFITING: KIDNEY CANCER ASSOCIATION
EVENT DATE: Apr 26, 2014
Two things Bill Griffin loved: Owls Roost Trail and helping others. Let's make them come together in 2014!
On April 26, 2014, Sue is going to run the Owls Roost 5k. She is dedicating the race to Bill and looking for others to join her, both to run the race and to raise money for the Kidney Cancer Association.
When we moved to Greensboro, Bill really fell in love with all of the great trails so close to our house. He spent countless hours trail running, hiking, orienteering and mountain biking, and knew them like the back of his hand. Eventually, the race bug bit him and he became involved in trail races like the Owls Roost Rumble and adventure races like the Flying Frog. He also had a great time inspiring me and so many other friends to get healthy while enjoying the outdoors. And if anyone got hurt overdoing it or (ahem) fell off their bike on Owls Roost Trail, who better to turn to for advice! Trails were his great escape from the stress of of work and all of his other commitments, plus a way to make even more friends.
Bill and I both competed in the Owls Roost Rumble 5k and Half Marathon a few years ago, each at our own pace. When he was diagnosed with kidney and brain cancer in 2012, Bill spoke several times about wanting to put together a trail race or a beginner adventure race to raise money for kidney cancer. Unfortunately, he was not able to fulfill that idea. Out of all the trails in the state, Owls Roost was probably his favorite, the one he would come back to again and again. This race also has a lot of meaning to Sue, as it's the one that I've been trying to do as a "comeback" but have been putting off for several years due to how difficult it is. I've done lots of other 5k's, but most of those don't involve running straight up a muddy hill full of snakes. Bill was the only person who understood my love/hate relationship with this race and would be 110% behind me. I'm hoping that lots of other people will be too!
For anyone in Greensboro or North Carolina who likes a good challenge, I would love to have you join me in Bill's memory at Bur-Mil Park at 8 am on Saturday, April 26 to run the race. You can register at http://owlsroostrumble.com/. But sign up early, because both the 5k and the Half cap at about 300. Or come later that morning and bring your bike to ride some of Bill's favorite trails after the runners come in. There are also plenty of activities at the park, as well as a playground and fun for the whole family.
For everyone, I hope you will join me in making a donation on or before race day to the Kidney Cancer Association in Bill's memory. March 31 will be the one year anniversary of Bill's passing, and I would like for us all to not only reflect on what a great impact he had on our lives and how much we miss him, but also to carry forward something positive that will help others with kidney cancer. I've checked out the Kidney Cancer Association, and they receive the highest rating from Charity Navigator, meaning that they use as much of our donations as possible to help people, and don't waste them on advertising and administrative costs.
I've got 4 months to train for this race, and I'm completely out of shape. I'll keep you posted if you help me stay motivated. Please join me as we bring some light and positivity into the world in 2014!
