BENEFITING: SEATTLES UNION GOSPEL MISSION
The gym at the Youth Reach Out Center (Seattle's Union Gospel Mission) is in need of a remodel. New bleachers (the old ones have recently been removed because they are unsafe), new baskets (some of the current ones are stuck at the wrong heights), new windows (this would save the UGM money on electricity), a HVAC system (as of now the gym temperature is the extreme of the temperature outside. Boiling hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter), and a new floor (the current floor is over 20 years old and has chunks missing)
The major costs of this project are the HVAC (estimated cost $80,000) and the floor (estimated cost $35,000-$50,000). The other parts of the project (baskets, bleachers, windows) are between $1,700 and $8,000. The goal is to be able to provide UGM with parts of this project as the money is raised since each part is currently a great need for them.
The gym serves the diverse Rainier Valley community in south Seattle, providing free/low cost programs to at-risk youth. The mission of the athletic program is provide a fun, positive and most importantly safe environment to teach kids athletic skills as well as life skills. Coaches who volunteer their time teach the importance of sportsmanship and try to inspire their players to push themselves past good and to be great. The athletic program wants each and every kid who participates to leave with three things. A desire to continue to be active throughout their life, respect for themselves as well as those around them, and the confidence in their ability and a desire to achieve great things no matter how difficult a road it appears to be.
