My participation in the NYC Marathon is one of a number of fundraisers for the Bob Leverington Memorial Youth Music Project – known as ‘Bob’s Music Award’. The headline aims are simple – to empower young and disadvantaged people who wish to show their talent to a wider audience and to support interest in Tajik musical culture of all kinds among young people.
Bob Leverington was the Head of UK Aid in Tajikistan and was a big part of the international donor community until August 2015 when he was sadly taken from us early. I knew him personally as a colleague and friend in my capacity as the World Bank Country Manager in Tajikistan, as did the Director of Oxfam in Tajikistan. As we wanted to commemorate Bob, many of his colleagues and friends in Tajikistan recalled how important music was to him and also his keen interest in the music scene here in Tajikistan. Bob was also a great supporter of any work, which empowered young and disadvantaged people and gave generously and freely of his time. Now it is our chance to give too and give more young people a chance to shine.
