THE STORY:

It is with great honor to introduce to you future M.D. graduate from the reputable Sophie Davis Biomedical School of Medicine in Manhattan, New York, Mr. Derek Hodge. Derek is a NYC high school senior chosen to participate in a 7 year fast track to medicine, B.S./ M.D. program .This allows Derek to obtain a B.S. degree in 3 years then matriculate into the CUNY School of Medicine to continue the remaining 4 years of study. Acceptance into the Sophie Davis program is highly selective with only a 6% acceptance rate. Derek is a remarkable student possessing innumerable qualities enabling him to overcome many obstacles. He was mostly raised in a single family home in the South Side of Jamaica , New York and has faced many hardships. Derek was born with nerve damage causing a hearing deficiency responsible for him losing over 80 % of hearing in his left ear. Nevertheless, it has not prevented Derek from maintaining a 3.7 GPA , serving in student government, belonging to the National Honors Society, serving as assistant editor for his high school newspaper, playing varsity basketball for all 4 years of high school at Martin Van Buren, taking numerous honors and advanced placement courses, along with participating and completing a slew of other activities and accomplishments. As the Fall school year approaches, I implore you to help sponsor Derek in achieving his life long dream of helping others by donating to the cost of fees, books, and room and board . Derek has worked towards this aspiration of becoming a doctor his entire life. At a young age, Derek knew his life long dream was to help sick people become better and healthy people remain well. For such a long time, Derek was always told that if you worked hard , studied hard, and played by the rules, it wasn't much that you couldn't achieve. The harsh reality of it all, is that it takes plenty of money to actualize dreams of becoming a doctor. Any and all monies received will go directly to funding his college education. Any amount is welcomed and well appreciated. Thank you in advance for helping such a wonderful and deserving high school student realize his dream of becoming a doctor.
