Most of you know what it’s like to lose a dog, cat, or horse; but could you imagine dedicating a major part of your life to caring for hundreds of horses seven days a week year after year? Because you know that if you don’t, most of these horses would go to the killers. And most of these horses are in the prime of their life -- 3 to 15 years old. The average life span of a horse is mid- to upper 20s.
You might ask how does this happen? Simply put, many in the horse racing industry work a horse and if it’s not fast enough or develops any issue that might slow it down, they unload the overhead. We usually don’t ask the question what happens to these beautiful animals because we really don’t want to know or just don’t think about it. It’s not always just the racing business. We also hear about someone who has horses and doesn’t take care of them or they fell on bad times or the owner passed away. It’s not the horses’ fault, but they end up bearing the horrible life that is dealt them.
Animals have been a significant part of my life since I was a pup myself -- my dogs, cat, and horses. They are very important to me. However, I would be telling a tale if I said I had the amount of dedication it takes to care for 50 or 60 at a time.
It takes a very special person to take on that level of responsibility and dedication to take care of that many horses, to train them, to love them, to feed them, to find permanent homes for them, to continually ask people to donate their time, and to continually work at fundraising. Well, that’s what my friend Margo Sutter, founder of Mid America Horse Rescue, does.
If the fundraising would hit a slow spell, Margo would use her personal funds as well as some of her most passionate volunteers. After 7 years of ups and downs, Mid America Horse Rescue has hit a rough patch and needs our help now!
I am asking everyone I know to immediately go to www.crowdrise.com/MAHR and make a donation to Mid America Horse Rescue (MAHR). Whatever you can do will be greatly appreciated. But the help is needed now! Please be part of the MAHR Team.
I know we can raise $25,000 one donation at time by the end of June. If you prefer to mail your tax-deductible donation, please mail it to Mid America Horse Rescue, PO Box 1032, Columbia, IL 62236.
My close friend Margo Sutter`s birthday is June 15. I can’t think of a present she would appreciate more than a donation to her charity -- Mid America Horse Rescue.
Thank you for listening, and thank you for your support.
