We plan to directly impact the impoverished in the Washington D.C. area, but also plan to assist those who are fighting cancer globally. We are working to raise funds on behalf of A Wider Circle, a local D.C. charity that lifts families out of poverty, and we are also biking to benefit LIVESTRONG. Though many people are aware of the impact that cancer has on families and communities, it is sad how many people are ignorant to the high level of poverty in the D.C. area. A September, 2009 article in the Washington Post states that 1 in 4 children in the D.C. area were living under the poverty level. Coupled with the disastrous effects of the current economic recession it is hard to imagine how long this cycle will last. It is important that we act now to stop the growth of poverty, because the more time is wasted, the greater the problem grows. We are the ideal group to help curb the spread of poverty in the D.C. area in particular, because we are young. We are deeply connected to social media, and we can use these powerful tools to encourage our friends and family to aid our efforts through their own volunteering. We are using our youth and energy to the best of our ability by hoping to cycle across Europe, in the hopes that we will incite people to accomplish their own visions of future.
