THE STORY:

My husband and I moved into our home in June 2001 with 2 cats, Magic and Kitty Kidwhaa. One night in July 2001 we noticed 4 kittens and a "momma" cat playing in the front yard. Over the weeks, we observed that the kittens were feral and the momma cat was very skiddish. We managed to catch one of the kittens along with the momma cat and brought them into our home. The momma cat was already pregnant again and subsequently had another litter of 4 kittens. We were able to find homes for 2 kittens and kept 2, Sammy and Junie Bird plus momma. Over the next few years, there was a steady flow of strays showing up looking for a home. Bootsie lived in our backyard for about 4 months after his owner died in the house behind us before he decided it was a good idea to join our family. Pretty Boy strolled in the front door one day when I went out to get the mail. Now it's 2006 and our hero "Papa" shows up at the back door with a tiny black and white kitten. We pick up the kitten to bring inside and tried to get Papa to follow, but he would not. A little side note...we actually assumed Papa was the momma of the the kitten until a few weeks later, once he trusted us, and we took him to the vet to be spayed. SURPRISE!!! She needed neutered. How unusual... for the male to be the caretaker of a tiny kitten. The tiny black and white kitten took the name of Nika and the family grew once again...to 10 Papa's next project was Leo...a yellow tabby kittten born in our next door neighbor's backyard. Papa took leo under his wing escorting him to the food that we place outside and kept him safe. Leo lived outside for almost a year...papa was not able to coax him inside our home. I finally did get leo by the scruff one evening while he was eating and has lived with us for years but leo is VERY feral, but sooo cute Gordon was our next guest...he was found on the golf course where my parents live. We think that he was a victim of some very unfortunate events. The timeline matches a suicide death across the street from my parents. Midnight came to eat in our backyard for probably 2 or 3 months. Eventually, she brought along her litter of four kittens. All reside in our home. I must stress that all the felines in our home that we are able to touch are spayed or neutered. Most people think we are crazy, but we cannot turn away an animal in need. Too many times people just cast away their pets without conscience. Sadly, Papa died last month after battling mouth cancer. He will be missed...the cats who were lucky to be one of the ones under his watchful "eye" are grateful and dealing with him being gone in their own way. Your donations will go to feeding and care of all our feline residents...17
