Our mission at PARENTS, Inc. is to strengthen families by providing resources, skills, support and advocacy to create cycles of positive parenting! We work with parents from all backgrounds to move towards this goal, including parents with open child abuse and neglect cases in Family Court, incarcerated parents, parents in substance abuse treatment, and your every day, average parent who really wants to make the time to educate themselves so that they can be the best parent possible! Please watch the video testimony of The Rodrigues Family and hear how PARENTS, Inc. made a positive impact on their family!
Also, read below as our Oahu Program Director, Tara Buckley, shares her story about why she does this work and why she believes in PARENTS, Inc.
I grew up in a home with young, military parents, who were clearly torn between settling down and growing up. Alcohol flowed freely between my parents and their friends, and somewhere in the vast abyss of family photos, there’s a picture of me, at 2 years old, with a Budweiser can in my hand, which someone thought was funny enough to memorialize. I remember the effect of alcohol on my father far more than my mother because it made him violent, and physical discipline was always an inevitability; not that it ever stopped the behaviors, but it was a way for him to release the anger the alcohol intensified inside him, and my brother and I were easy targets.
When I was 7 years old my mother gave my father an ultimatum; stop drinking or she would take us and leave, and somehow he found it inside himself to stop, cold turkey, and he didn’t touch a drop of alcohol again. I don’t know how he did it.
What I do know is that my childhood experiences shaped my belief that parenting education is a HUGE part of helping parents, especially young parents, by giving them tools to reduce conflict in their homes and by helping them to understand why children behave like children. If my parents had taken a parenting class when they had us, I wonder sometimes if the educators would have noticed my father’s drinking, and if he might have gotten enough information to realize that the brutal physical discipline wasn’t working, and more than anything that it was damaging his relationships with his children. Even though the abuse stopped, it still affects my life in many ways today. That is why I am so passionate about keeping children safe and preventing them from experiencing the trauma of abuse!
And I was one of the lucky ones.
Throughout my time as a social worker I’ve worked with children who have been beaten, starved, ignored, sexually abused, emotionally abused, and hurt in every conceivable way you can imagine, including death. SO many of these families could have, and have, benefited from basic parenting education. When parents know better, they do better. PARENTS, Inc. exists to help strengthen all families and to provide them with valuable resources, skills, support, and advocacy that they can use to create cycles of positive parenting. I believe in what we do. Please help us further our mission by preventing any other children from experiencing child abuse and neglect!
