BENEFITING: Restavec Freedom Foundation
EVENT DATE: Feb 14, 2014
I think I was in high school when I first came across some articles saying that slavery hadn't ended with the end of the civil war in America... that it was still present today, and by some measures even more people were presently affected. At the time was shocked and wondered if the stories I was reading were legitimate... and if so why we hadn't learned about in social studies earlier?!
Then some years ago I read the book "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" and had that knowledge confirmed, learning many more horrifying truths about human trafficking (mercifully paired with a few incredible stories of people rising up and making positive changes in their community).
Also many years back heard via Oprah the story of Jean-Robert Cadet -- an author and human rights advocate who was a former child slave in Haiti (called a 'restavek') -- and could never get it completely out of my mind. Thought about this again recently when reading NY Times reporter Nick Kristof's New Year's OpEd on the subject: "A Girl's Escape" (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/02/opinion/kristof-a-girls-escape.html?hp&rref=opinion&_r=1)
So, while there's still a lot I have to read and learn about this topic of modern day slavery, I know enough to have decided it's one of most deserving 'causes' I've ever come across. Please consider making an investment in fighting child slavery by contributing to the Restavek Freedom Foundation.
Here's their online store, where you can see what good can be done even with a simple $10 donation for schol supplies: https://www.restavekfreedom.org/estore/all
To start I'm gathering donations from my birthday thru Valentine's Day.
