BENEFITING: Research Down Syndrome
EVENT DATE: Feb 24, 2013
Last year Mike and I raised over $13,000 for Down syndrome research thru generous donations from friends and family! We are ready to race again!! In just over 30 days, Mike and I will take to the magic streets of Florida to run the Princess Half Marathon! Join Mike and I as we BOTH try to again have personal bests! In November Lara had a PR of 1:42 and Mike had an impressive first race at 2:22:22! This year we plan to run the Coast to Coast, so another half is in our furture end of August in California - God-willing!
Most importantly, we will be running to raise money for Research Down Syndrome (RDS), a non-profit foundation that supports Down syndrome cognitive research, an area that in the last 5 years has experienced great advances towards developing biomedical therapies to treat the cognitive impairment of people of all ages with Down syndrome. The potential of these treatments to address Down syndrome cognitive dysfunction is tremendous - improving memory, learning and communication – and expanding and enhancing life opportunities for these individuals. Until recently, the medical and research community considered the cognitive impairment associated with Down syndrome to be too complex to understand, offering no hope for the development of treatments. Now scientists have identified unique biological mechanisms associated with cognitive dysfunction in Down syndrome, suggesting the promise of targeted biomedical therapies that could lead to improvement in the intellectual difficulties experienced by those with Down syndrome.
