THE STORY:

Currently Comal Park is commonly overlooked as a place to enjoy in our neighborhood. Homeless people sleep in the park and drug dealers make their way from the corner store to the park as they do business. During the day the park has trash, condoms and needles throughout the area and in the evenings it is intimidating to enter the grounds that have transformed into a drug den. The East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood’s goal is to create a space at Comal Park that is safe, clean and welcoming to children, adults and pets who live or visit the area. The addition of United Way’s Born Learning Trail will also help to engage the community in a way that will promote literacy and school readiness for our children and give families a reason to visit the park more often.

Thanks to the Austin Parks Foundation, the East Cesar Chavez Planning Team has been awarded a $7,631 grant  to improve Comal Park. Soon you will see new trash cans, two dog poop stations, more park benches, an additional grill and United Way’s Born Learning Trail. This trail will offer activities in English and Spanish to help promote literacy, as well as add some vibrant colors to the sidewalks in the park. A component of this grant is that the neighborhood raises at least $500 to contribute towards expenses and volunteer about 175 hours throughout the year to install equipment and make improvements to the area. Any funds raised above $500 will go towards funding the quarterly community gatherings.

It's My Park Day, on March 2, 2013, will be the big volunteer day for installation of the Born Learning Trail. Walk, run or ride your bike by Comal Park regularly and watch the progress!
