THE STORY:

Children should be free to spend their summer days in the sunshine, playing sports, drawing with sidewalk chalk, listening to music and laughing. With the huge influx of unaccompanied children that have been caught crossing the border – more than 57,000 since October 2013 alone – we have all become more aware that thousands and thousands of children do not have the luxury of enjoying their summer days in the sun. Primarily from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, these children are fleeing neighborhoods and cities filled with violence, abuse, neglect and terror. Leaving their families behind, they are making the difficult 1,500 mile journey across Mexico and the Rio Grande to try to create a better life for themselves and their loved ones. The pressure and danger that they face are extremely overwhelming, particularly for children so young.

Once they arrive in the U.S., these terrified and exhausted children are temporarily taken into the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol. After a few days, they are then transported to one of several hundred short-term shelters across the United States which are run by social service organizations with expertise in caring for children in need.

Leake & Watts has recently opened one of these shelters, known as our Passage of Hope (Camino de Esperanza) Program. As a social service agency providing support to vulnerable children, adults and families in New York for nearly 185 years, we are proud to now support these vulnerable children. We provide short-term care and assistance, including case management, educational and clinical services, while working to link them with family members and/or other sponsors in the United States. Our goal is to provide the support, nurturing and care that these children to move forward with their lives and thrive.

But to make sure that these children have everything that they need, we need YOUR help. These children are coming to us with just the clothes on their backs. One child even arrived without shoes. To welcome these children to our campus and help them feel comfortable, we provide them with fresh clothing and hygiene supplies, as well as stuffed animals and games. The children have been really enjoying the sidewalk chalk, soccer games and jump ropes in particular. Unfortunately, our resources for purchasing these items are very limited. Your contribution can help us provide nice clothing and shoes for the children as they arrive, as well as games, sports equipment, art supplies and bilingual educational tools.

These children have been through so much, and our entire Leake & Watts community is eager to help them feel safe and welcome on our campus. But we cannot do it without the support of our community partners and friends. Please consider helping us meet the needs of these brave, resilient children. We will be grateful for anything that you can contribute.
