BENEFITING: Watts Learning Center Inc
Passport to the World, an educational travel program started by Watts Learning Center, takes a small group of students – with parent chaperones – on an international trip every two years. The program's goal is to expose students from South L.A. to a world outside of South L.A., provide them with an educational and cultural learning experience and develop "global learners". By traveling to other countries around the globe, children better understand and appreciate other cultures as well as themselves. More importantly, they have an opportunity to experience international travel, see money from another country, experience different foods and meet students who look like them but who are very different. These are immeasurable experiences that create a whole child which, in turn, encourage transformation on a global level. Since the first trip in 2002 to South Africa, WLC students have visited Senegal and The Gambia, Ghana, Togo and Benin and Costa Rica. This year, Watts Learning Center is busy planning the 2016 Passport to the World trip to Brazil and raising funds to cover the travel expenses for the participating students and chaperones. From school wide family fun nights and weekly snack sales to Mother-Daughter Teas and annual banquets, our dedicated parents, students and faculty have been hard at work organizing fundraisers to make this trip a possibility. In spite of these efforts, we are still in need of financial assistance.
