THE STORY:

"Lets start a coalition so even the broke can go"
- Pharrell (Paris, Tokyo Remix)

The beginnings of Passport Project can be traced back to a song, “Paris, Tokyo Remix”1 and a trip to Spain. The trip transformed the life of Kenji Summers while imparting an idea. An idea of changing a generation’s perspective on global travel, culture, and their perception of social entrepreneurship. In the world we live in today there are more Americans with a Facebook account than with a passport2. Kenji took note that money was a significant barrier to passport ownership and that visiting sites online were a more affordable alternative for curious youth. U.S. states where people have higher incomes are more likely to have people with passports and a willingness to travel out of the country3. Passport Project believes the youth are the key to the future of every country; starting this movement was designed to embrace the duality of an age where hip-hop and Givenchy are bedmates and teenagers grow up with dreams of creating culture rather than simply consuming it. The goal, in addition to increasing passport ownership, is to inspire and empower young people to consider their existence in relation to the rest of the world as opposed to their immediate reality.

WHERE IS YOUR DONATION GOING?

Funds for a young person, starting with Americans, to get their passport and a first trip out of their country.

WHAT AMOUNT SHOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE?

$1, $5, $10, $20, $100, $135. It is completely up to you. We love you unconditionally.

HOW ARE YOU REALLY REALLY HELPING?

You are giving a young person access to transformational experiences. Remember the first time you heard about someone's travels abroad? Remember their smile? Remember their bright eyes? Multiple studies have shown travel makes you more creative and more intelligent. Along with travel being a basic human desire that we ALL feel, we want young people to become more well-rounded, in turn becoming better citizens and assets to society.

I was fortunate enough to study abroad in Tokyo for one year and years later, work abroad in London for one year, with countless travels in between. Traveling and experiencing other cultures provides so much exposure and real-life learning opportunities not to mention conversation starters. ; ) Every high school senior and college student I meet, I encourage to study abroad--it should be a mandatory requirement! I'm happy to support a mission like The Passport Project. -KW 6 years ago
