THE STORY:

My name is Mary McMahon and I am a second year teacher at Friendship Chamberlain Public Charter School in the Southeast Quadrant of Washington, DC. Currently there is very little parent involvement in my school district which has resulted in a lack of respect towards teachers by both parents and students alike, and the continued failure to recognize and support the importance of a child's education outside of school. In an attempt to increase parent involvement, mend poor school/family relationships, and strengthen the unity needed to send the message that education is a non-negotiable to our scholars I will be spearheading the organization of a new Parent Teacher committee for the 2013-2014 school year. One of the first things I would like to be able to do is increase the number of parents that come out on Back to School Night (prior to the school year starting) and the first PTA meetings by incentivizing it through handing out free school supplies. I am asking for 2,000 dollars in order to buy a plethora of school supplies to give out from notebooks to folders to pencils/pens, etc.
This is an important cause because after working in a school system in an impoverished inner city for the last 2 years it is clear that nothing will improve in the schools or the community if parents and teachers are not working together to support one another and to support the children. The importance of education is not obvious, the needs of the whole child are not being met, and the community and its people are not thriving unless parents and teachers are united on one front. For that reason it is imperative that I am able to incentivize parent involvement in order to increase it.
