Paths to Healing
Join the Intercultural Counseling Connection in our effort to raise $6,000 by June 30th!
The mission of the Connection is to provide culturally responsive, linguistically appropriate mental health services for refugees, asylum seekers, and asylees living here in Maryland. Our dedicated counselors provide pro bono therapeutic care for survivors of conflict-related trauma and torture.
We’re launching our first-ever crowdfunding campaign to coincide with two important dates: World Refugee Day (June 20th) and the U. N. International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (June 26th).
Your support of the Connection can help make a difference in the lives of refugees and survivors of war trauma and torture, right here at home!
A GLOBAL CRISIS…
In recent months, harrowing images of forced migration have saturated the news: crowded rafts of Syrian refugees fleeing war; streams of women and children from Central America escaping paramilitary conflict. The number of displaced individuals fleeing violence and persecution worldwide has soared, surpassing 50 million for the first time since World War II. The magnitude of the crisis can feel overwhelming. You might wonder, what can I do to help? Can I really make a difference?
…A LOCAL RESPONSE
Maryland has a long tradition of welcome, and is a major center of refugee resettlement on the East Coast. Between 2010 and 2014 alone, our state received over 6,700 refugees from 50 different countries. During this same period, Maryland became the new home of nearly 4,000 asylees – individuals who have fled persecution in their home countries and been granted safe haven here. Thousands more are currently in the midst of the difficult, prolonged legal process of seeking asylum.
Whether from Syria, El Salvador, Burundi, or Burma, these survivors have suffered displacement and devastating loss. Access to trauma-informed mental health care can help them cope with the effects of pre-migration experiences as well as the challenges of cultural adjustment.
The Intercultural Counseling Connection provides culturally responsive therapeutic services for asylum seekers, asylees, and refugees in the greater Baltimore area. Our network of dedicated clinicians includes native speakers of Nepali, Spanish, French, Tigrinya and Farsi. Our other therapists work with the help of trained interpreters. Counseling services provided through the Connection are provided at no cost to clients.
But barriers still remain. Individuals in the first stages of the asylum-seeking process have no work authorization and no means of income. They receive no federal benefits. Meeting even basic needs can be a struggle; lack of bus fare may prevent access to needed services.
