I'm KK, a senior at Woodside Priory School, and my mom is Patty! We are running as a mother-daughter team, which works out because we love to run together. Patty is much more fond of running and so, of course, she is much faster than me.
We are running to raise money for the Daraja Academy. The Daraja Academy is a school in Kenya for female students who excel both in academics and leadership. The school is in need of funds to continue the education of these wonderful girls.
Here are the two girls that we are sponsoring!
Mary K (seen in the first three pictures)
"Mary K comes from a single parent home, where her mother has been out of work for some time. Just recently, her mother found a job working at a local hotel. Mary is very close with her mother as she is an only child. Mary K's mother pushes her to excellence, almost to excess.
Mary K was so nervous in her initial interview with Daraja Academy. The Daraja Academy administrators thought that Mary K was so quiet and would need a lot of drawing out. However once she grew comfortable in her surroundings, she was often seen laughing and joking with other students, showcasing her gorgeous smile.
More than any other student, Mary K has shown her true colors from the first day she arrived on campus. That first day, without being prompted, Mary K took a cloth from the kitchen and proceeded to wipe down the tables at the end of the meal. She continued to do this at every meal for two days. What's even more impressive was at the conclusion of the second term: Mary K showed herself as a true nurse, assissting four girls overcome an illness. Mary K took responsibility in bringing them meals, comforting them, helping them get the right medication, and reporting to Daraja Academy Administrators any changes in symptoms. She was given the new title of Health Prefect. Simply, Mary K is amazing and has incredible potential."
Carol Wanjiru (seen in the last two pictures)
"Carol comes from a 'home without means' although it is led by a wonderful and kind grandmother, according to this Daraja girl. She is one of three children that was abandoned by their mother to live with her grandparents. When Carol was in the sixth grade, her grandfather passed away after being run over in a road accident. Carol was so traumatized that she developed severe anxiety.
Carol is a gifted student and she studies hard. She scored very high on her 8th grade exams. Because of the poverty of her family, there was no hope for secondary school unless she received a scholarship. Luckily she heard about Daraja Academy and applied there!
In her interview, Carol shined. She sat straight and confident and looked the admissions team in the eye. For a girl with anxiety, she overcame her inner turmoil to show us the best side of her. With a little counseling, and our WISH program, she can achieve her dreams of becoming a doctor."
