In 2012 I had big aspirations to finish a 5K to support my heart- the animals and programs of Talbot Humane. 3 years, a number of 5Ks, 10ks and 6 half marathons later I am still running. This transformation only happened thanks to animals and people of Talbot Humane and our UNLEASHED Charity Running Program.
My next goal is a full marathon.
That's right. 26.2 miles for the animals on October 17, 2015. This is a HUGE commitment of training, time and self care to get me across the finish line. For this, my goal is to raise $10,000 for those without a voice, the animals that benefit from the amazing work done by the staff and volunteers at Talbot Humane. As a side note, I am fairly certain I have officially lost my MIND! But, at least it's going to a grand cause!
If you don't know me, I have been a member of the Talbot Humane team since 1999. I began my journey as an animal caregiver. Within 6 months became an Animal Control Officer. From this position I was Shelter Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator and now the proud Executive Director of the organization. I have seen what lack of care, cruelty and neglect does to an animal. I've also had the joy of watching the resilience and love still within these animals once treated with love and respect. I have witnessed loving pet owners surrender their pets because they simply cannot afford the cost of care. I have been part of the joy in the face of a new adopter, and held the hand of a pet owner experiencing the pain and anguish of the loss of a beloved pet.
The staff and volunteers at Talbot Humane are always looking outside the box to find new ways to help the animals and pet owners of our community. We are an open admission shelter that turns away no animal in need. We provide spay neuter services to all pets in our care as well as a low cost/no cost program to the citizens. We commit to placing all treatable and adoptable animals in our care. We treat injuries and illnesses, work on behavioral needs of animals, and do everything we can to ensure a quality of life for the shelter pets. Our 91% live release rate speaks to this. Staff and volunteers provide humane education programs to every school in the county, provide more than 4 tons of food to pets in need each year through our Pet Pantry, and offer behavioral assistance to pet owners in turmoil. These are but a few of the many ways Talbot Humane improves the lives of animals in our community.
My commitment to Talbot Humane is not a small one. Honestly, I am not sure I would have committed to running the Baltimore Marathon on October 17, 2015 without the goal to raise the much needed funds for Talbot Humane. With the amazing support of my UNLEASHED team members, family and friends and you, I will get there. I am truly scared! BUT, I am going forward, one step at a time. For the animals.
I challenge you to look within yourself and make a donation as well. I am doing the running, won't you consider making a gift to save the life of an animal in need? I appreciate it, the animals need it.
