THE STORY:

Walking for Better Treatment. Walking for a Cure.

 

                           Amelia and I are  participating in the Smashing Walnuts Foundation “Walk & Fitness Challenge” on June 5, 2016, to raise money for childhood brain cancer research. In 2014, the National Cancer Institute’s budget was $4.9 billion. Of that, all types of childhood cancer research were allocated just 4% of $195 million. And while treatment options develop slowly, the incidence of cancer in children has jumped. Approximately 85 kids are diagnosed with childhood brain cancer weekly, or approximately 4400 children per year. This mismatch is the point of impact for Smashing Walnuts.

By donating to the “Walk & Fitness Challenge”, you can help Smashing Walnuts focus on funding childhood brain cancer research and clinical trials. Childhood brain cancer and adult brain cancer are NOT THE SAME. The research Smashing Walnut’s supports seeks to understand the cellular and molecular biology of childhood brain tumors. That kind of knowledge has led to discovery of new diagnostic and treatment approaches. Together, steps are being taken to create a world without childhood brain cancers. Thank you for your support!

At 9 years old, Gabriella Miller was diagnosed with DIPG, an inoperable brain tumor that was the size of a walnut. Realizing how little awareness and funding there was for childhood cancer and particularly childhood brain cancer, Gabriella quickly became a global advocate for children with cancer and started the Smashing Walnuts Foundation. Gabriella was only 10 years old when she passed away in 2013. Her family now continues her mission of awareness.  Smashing Walnuts is Gabriella’s legacy, founded to give kids like her a fighting chance.
