>>>> July 30 - I've been in Kathmandu for 5 weeks now, working, volunteering, and teaching some amazing students. We've been teaching 3 days per week at Manasarovar Academy, for grades 3, 4, and 5. We mostly teach Science classes, but also did a Poetry unit for a week. Each Friday and Saturday, we've been spending time at the Kailash Home, tutoring students during their study time, playing sports together, providing "Friday outdoor movie nights," and leading Bird-watching hikes each Saturday morning.

We also managed to hike out to several remote quake-damaged villages... these are places that we supported with donated food and tin roofing for temporary shelters.

Since you, and others, supported me so generously, we had quite a bit of funds left over to utilize. We decided to use that money to sponsor a young student for 8 full years of high quality education at Manasarovar School. Her name is TENZIN CHOEDON, 3 years old, and will be able to attend school from Nursery through grade 5 thanks to YOU!

It has all been incredibly rewarding. I am shocked and saddened that we are leaving next week! Please do check out my latest posts and photos at kathmanduvoices.blogspot.com THANK YOU for your support!!! Love, Eliza

June 30 - Eliza & Paul are now in Kathmandu volunteering and teaching at Manasarovar School. Your donations have made this trip, and these volunteer efforts possible. Thank you!
Some GREAT NEWS is that several International and Nepali engineers have certified the Manasarovar school building as safe! Classes are back in session, and their 420+ kids have a safe, dry, and supportive place to spend their days... All the residential students (~40) are back in their rooms. Some families are still sleeping outside, under tarps and tent villages, due to their own homes being damaged or risky to inhabit.
We are teaching students at Manasarovar 3 days a week... English, Math & Science.
Traveling around Kathmandu we see a wide diversity of conditions. Some places seem undamaged and life, commerce, and traffic seems to be back to normal. But other areas are still full of tents, tarps, and piles of debris from collapsed buildings.
There is still so much help and rebuilding to do... Nepal will be recovering for decades. Both Eliza and I are overwhelmed by the massive needs all around us. We have to remind ourselves that we can't do it all...
We must focus on doing good and helping in one small area. Thank you again for your support in helping us do just that!

Can you PLEASE email me your physical MAILING ADDRESS? Many of you gave such generous donations, and we want to send you something special from Nepal.

Thank you again for supporting Manasarovar students and their families! This fundraiser has collected over $3,000 in donations. We wired the first $2,000 on May 20, and the next $1,000 will be sent Friday, June 19.

My daughter and I will travel to Nepal next week, to spend 6 weeks teaching, tutoring, and assisting the Manasarovar school community in any way possible.

You can follow our progress, and keep track of the situation in Nepal, by following our blog -- kathmanduvoices.blogspot.com

Thanks again for your support!

Hello, Namaste & Tashi Delek…
Hello, Namaste & Tashi Delek!

In just 3 weeks, I'll be flying to Nepal with my Dad to volunteer, work hard, teach & tutor, learn as much as I can, and report back via interviews and online videos. I am so excited, but also a bit nervous. The end of my own school year, studying for SAT tests, and final exams leaves me little time to do all the things I want in preparation for my Nepal project.

My Dad and I have been contacting friends in Nepal, and they are all very thankful that we still plan to come over to volunteer. They want us to help with teaching & tutoring, leading outdoor activities and hikes, and just spending time playing with the younger children. Some of these kids come from far away villages, and have been living outdoors in tents for 5 weeks. They are physically and emotionally exhausted by the stress of this earthquake tragedy. The directors requested us to spend some time just playing with the younger students.... educational games, any sports, silly games, etc. Just to help them be kids again.

Sometimes I think I should be more nervous than I am about this trip, but I feel pretty relaxed and confident. The airport is operating normally now, many hotels, shops and restaurants are open, and according to our friends, the huge Kathmandu traffic jams are getting back to "normal."

Traveling with my Dad, and knowing we have several close friends in Kathmandu, makes me feel supported and safe. Also, YOUR generous support gives me strength and purpose to go out and do whatever I can to help these wonderful people.

Thank you again for helping me fulfill this dream! I will try my best, and share what I learn.

Love,
Eliza

Hi Donation Jar! Thank you so much for your donation! We'll be wiring over this money ASAP, but the school directors actually just asked us to "wait a few days." The aftermath of the last big aftershock is taking all their attention. My Dad and I fly over in just about 6 weeks! We're really excited to help, but I'm also nervous to see how things have changed... love, Eliza and Paul

Hello Everyone,

So much has happened in Nepal these last few weeks. The tragic earthquake has caused so much destruction. My Dad and I are still planning to go in late June, but my project will have to adapt to changing conditions.

I've been thinking so much about the people of Nepal, and writing a bit. You can read something I wrote about the avalanche in Langtang on my BLOG:

http://kathmanduvoices.blogspot.com

It also has photos from when I visited Langtang 5 years ago with friends and my family....

Thank you again for your support of my project!
