Four years ago, Edward was barely half way through his chemotherapy while still recovering from limb salvage surgery to remove the 20 cm tumor that had engulfed his right femur. It was definitely a tough time to participate in a Cancer Walk. However, it was also a time when it was very important that we participate. We learned then that 1 in 320 kids is diagnosed with cancer. Cancer in kids??? It was something we thought was incredibly rare. We found out that it's not so rare.
Unfortunately, what is rare are new medicines to effectively treat cancer in children. The last, new pediatric cancer drug was developed over 20 years ago. Most current children's chemotherapy treatments are just dosed down versions of adult medicines. Medicines that can and do cause terrible side effects like nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, loss of appetite, hair loss and many, many more while they are being administered. Medicines that can cause even more terrible late effects like heart problems, joint problems, kidney problems, loss of fertility and secondary cancers, years after treatment ends. But what choice do you have? As a parent, you sign the consent forms hoping to rid your child of this horrible disease. You pray that he can deal with the side effects, hope that he will never have to deal with the late effects and hope and pray that he will never again have cancer. It shouldn't be this way. There should be more effective treatments that do less harm! There should be a CURE!
Unfortunately, Edward had another tumor show up on his right lung in January. His tumor has been removed and he is being scanned every four weeks. He is in need of your prayers. Here is the latest update… http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/edwardmigliore/journal
For all of these reasons and more, we will again be participating in the Hugs For Brady Twilight 5K and Family Fun Run which will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at South Brunswick High School, 750 Ridge Rd, Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852 - A Flat & Very Fast Course. The money we raise will fund and support collaborative research to find a cure for all cancers affecting children. We need your support. Edward needs your support.
There will be music, games, food, entertainment, and many prizes. We hope to see you there! Because together, we will conquer children's cancer.
Thank you so much!
With Love and Hope for a Cure,
