Thank you all so much for your donations, support and kind words of encouragement over the past months. Our BALS Marathon Team raised $104,324 from 191 donations. You are all incredibly generous and I hope you feel great about that. It feels good to do good!

The L.A. Marathon went well for the whole team. Mary completed her first 26.2, so she was guaranteed a PR. Maureen is a veteran marathoner and kept her focus on the pizza and beer at the finish. Tom stayed with our wheelchair marathoner, Chris, for the whole distance. Mike was having a tough day with early debilitating shin splints, but when he caught up to the wheelchair at mile 20 he was able to enjoy the last six miles running with the chair, having put his own pain in perspective. Pushing the chair is a very uplifting experience and the runners and spectators really respond to the effort. There is a tradition at the end that the ALS marathoner gets out of the chair and walks across the finish line with his family. It’s an emotional experience and worth taking a look at the pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/Beat-ALS-Marathon-Team-686930354690923/

The ALS Association’s Chief Scientist, Lucie Bruijn, Ph.D. MBA, sent a nice update explaining how our donations are funding research right here in the West through the Neuro Collaborative, which combines the efforts of three prominent laboratories at Cedars-Sinai, UCSD and the Gladstone Institutes (UCSF). These efforts are currently leading to actual clinical trials that show promise and also are developing technologies that will facilitate their transition from bench science to effective therapies. There is hope and we are making progress.

I’d like to express one last thank you for sticking with us these four years. I know donor fatigue sets in and that’s especially true after Michael’s passing, which took away that personal connection and urgency. But I know exactly what Michael would be doing if he were here and one of us wasn’t. He would be putting his head down and doing the work and trying to help other families dealing with the worst news they will ever hear. He would want to offer them some comfort and hope. And that is why we will be back next year and we hope you will be right here with us.

Friends, On behalf of all s…
Friends,

On behalf of all six BALS Marathon Team members, I want to thank you for your generosity and support during this endeavor. Four hundred of you donated $165,590 to fund research to find a treatment for ALS. Like Lou Gehrig, we are all very lucky to know such wonderful people and call them friends.

All of us are rallying around Michael Motherway who adds, "Thank you all for being so generous for ALS research. It's only a matter of time until this disease is cured. My special thanks to the six team BALS runners who braved the heat in this fundraising effort. God bless you all."

Oh, yeah, we did run the marathon as well. It was a good day out. It was a celebration of months of training and a celebration of life by pushing ALS marathoner Mark Hume over the 26.2 mile course in a wheelchair. We raised a little awareness as well as some money for the cause.

Again, thank you all so much. We will all be back again next year (including Paul even if he hasn't exactly agreed yet) and who knows, maybe some of you will be inspired to join us! February 14, 2016.

I want to send a personal thank you to all supporters of Mike and the BALS Team. We are 3 weeks from the race and we have all begun to taper our training. Your support goes a long way and I know Mike is proud and thankful for all your support. Thanks again.

Stuff About Me:

BALS Marathon Team 2.0.  Last year's marathon effort resulted in over $127,000 all of which went to ALS Research in the name of my friend Michael Motherway.  We set a bigger goal with more team members this time around so I had to be involved again.  Help us improve the lives of those with ALS.
