EVENT DATE: Nov 11, 2016

Paul Buijs

This Veteran's Day I will be attempting to break the Guinness world record for most weight swung by a kettlebell in an hour. My attempt to hold a world record is most certainly a vain personal bucket list item to be checked off. But why not try and use this unique moment to do some good as well?

I am a military veteran. After my military service I had the honor or serving on a team of federal law enforcement officers doing a job I believed in greatly. It was a tight team, most of whom were fellow veterans. I left that team to pursue a personal business venture. Since then, working by myself, I have felt lost and at times hopeless. The only thing that has kept me sane and not feeling 100% hopeless was my commitment to fitness.  The days I work out provide me with an armor against most of life's hardships. The days I don't workout my skin is thinner and the world could be against me personally.

During my time in the military I did not go to combat. I did not have bullets shot at me. I did not have bombs blowing up near me and I have still dealt with bouts of what I can only assume is depression.

Now I can only imagine what some of our veterans who have been exposed to trauma and head injuries might have to deal with in the world operating outside of their team.

If this is you, you are not alone.

There are people who acknoledge the enormity and severity of the PTSD situation within our veteran population as well as those who believe the PTSD card is overblown by people who should otherwise be getting back to work and digging in harder.

While I don't think we can help everyone suffering find a productive fit in the workplace right out of the gate, I do believe everyone can benefit mentally from exerting themselves physically.  Doing so could be the difference in keeping the light on at the end of the tunnel.

My goal is to add a drop to the bucket of support that allows our veterans to get the assistance they need (or help prevent them from needing help in the first place). All funds collected will be donated directly to the charity Active Heroes . After googling and researching various veteran based charities Active Heroes appears to be the one most aligned with providing activities for veterans to focus their energy on.

Thank you for reading this, thinking about it and to those who donate, thank you as well!
