THE STORY:

Paul Wang was born and raised in Queens, New York.

Paul’s interest in boxing began as a child as he spent time with his dad watching Mohammed Ali's fights on ESPN classic. According to Paul, Muhammad Ali's fluid movements, tenacity, and confidence made him one of the most graceful yet powerful fighters to ever to enter the ring. Paul was so intrigued by the legend surrounding him; that he eventually completed a biography about Mohammed Ali’s life in grade school. Paul was impressed and amazed by Ali’s fight and heroism both in and outside the ring as Ali persevered heroically as he defied fate, fighting Parkinson's Disease. Paul believes Ali personifies the word fighter in every aspect of his life both in and outside the ring.

Although Paul doesn't live by a personal motto, during a training session at Gleason's, a verse from the Beastie Boys song: Sure Sweet, a particular verse impacted Paul: “Because you can’t, won’t and you don’t stop”, keeps Paul focused throughout his training.

Paul understands firsthand how difficult it is to grow up in the boroughs of New York City. Gleason's’: "Give a Kid a Dream provides a great outlet for New York City’s youth as it provides children with the tools necessary in order to be a part of a larger community where opportunities are abundant along with support and role models where hope never fails. Paul has never observed people work so diligently before whether it is the boxers, trainers or staff, Gleason's is an exhibition of hard work. In addition, the people of Gleason's demonstrate compassion as they reach out to at-risk youth. Charity and giving back to others is imperative for Paul as he lives his life each day in order to make a positive impact on his community.

Paul currently resides in Brooklyn.

My current heroes are my trainers Devon and Heather.

I was inspired to train at Gleason's after watching a short documentary on Heather "The Heat Hardy." I find it humbling to see two people make such sacrifices to train a group of novices. Especially, when Heather is competing in a professional bout in a few weeks. I elected to participate in this charity event to help at risk youth. But I train hard for Heather and Devon.

I'm curious. I never boxed before but I wanted to experience first hand what it was about. It takes complete focus and determination to not only learn proper technique but also to apply them in the ring. As Mike Tyson famously said, "Everyone has a game plan until they get punched." He is absolutely right. I am definitely no longer curious about what that feels like.

Charity and especially those that benefit the youth are one of my greatest passions. As someone who was born and raised in this great city, I know firsthand how difficult it is to grow up here. But a program such as "Give a Kid a Dream" provides such a great outlet for the youth. It enables children to be part of a larger community. I have never seen people work so diligently before. From boxers to trainers to staff, Gleason's is an exhibition of hard work. In addition, the people behind Gleason's demonstrates their compassion by reaching out to at-risk youth.
