Due to a lack of resources and long-standing social stigmas, living with a disability in a developing country can be very physically and emotionally challenging.
But a unique camp located in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala is working to improve the lives of many local teens and adults with disabilities by empowering them to socialize, travel, and form genuine relationships with people outside of their own families.
After spending time at the camp in 2011 and 2012, I felt compelled to start documenting the experience--some of this footage is captured in the short promotional video shown here--and I will be returning to Guatemala in September for four months to shoot a longer documentary about a few of the individuals I met at camp. I want to share their compelling and inspiring stories, and ultimately, I hope the film will bring attention and financial support to many of these deserving individuals, as well as the organizations working to improve their lives.
As a seasoned TV and digital video producer with 10 years of experience, I am very excited to start my first independent documentary project, but I need your help!
Please help me raise funds for video and audio equipment, my flight to Guatemala, and food and housing while living there.
Please also follow my blog where I will be sharing updates on my project and photos from my travels: http://shanimalrose.wordpress.com
Thank you so much for your help!
*UPDATE (9/10/2014): Thanks to the overwhelming generosity I've received in the past week, I've nearly met the goal I initially set for the first phase of my project! Never imagining how much support I'd receive so quickly, I wanted to start small and just account for the most pressing items needed to be able to start this adventure.
While I'm applying for grants to be able to sustain the project through completion, in order to get these grants, I will need a polished trailer to share with my application. As you can imagine, there are many additional costs I'll incur in the process of creating the trailer (e.g., transportation to and from interviews, translation and transcription services, editors, unexpected costs, etc.) and thus, I've decided to continue this exciting momentum and expand my fundraising goal.
Thank you again. I am so deeply appreciative of the encouragement and support - both monetary and emotional - and I so look forward to sharing updates from my journey!
