EVENT: 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2018
Here we are again for an unbelieveable 6th trip, training and running the 13.1 miles of the half marathon to support the Animal Rescue League in honor of Winston and Troegs. It's hard to believe this will be the sixth time, and I'm ever so thankful for your continued support! If you missed any of the the last 5 years, here is the backstory:
In the summer of 2012 I got this crazy idea that I would run half marathon in honor of Winston (our bulldog who had just passed away) and our newest (at that time!) family member, Troegs who we adopted in April. I had the idea that I could try and raise money to then donate to the Animal Rescue League. Of course, if you know me, I've never been a runner. I don't even look like a runner, I'm far too big. But the idea kept nagging at me, and I thought well just maybe I could do it. So I started jogging here and there to see what my body could do. And then I started actually running regularly. I told myself if I could make 3 miles without stopping that would be a good enough start that I could actually register for the half marathon and train for real. And then one night I made it. Now I know 3 miles isn't that far, but for a guy who at that time was only two years removed from pushing nearly 300 lbs it felt amazing. So I signed up and trained and ran that first half marathon in May 2013. As we got closer to the marathon I made a fundraising push that included a promise of running in my kilt should donations reach $1000, which would cover the total care of one animal staying ARL for an entire month. Thanks to awesome folks like you that first year we raised over $1200 for ARL, and as promised I ran the half marathon in a kilt.
Year two training was a little tougher with a rough winter, and also the birth of our new bundle of joy, Colin Joseph Williams, but I was determined to do well and make a signficant impact again. And again, thanks to your awesome support I sported the kilt for another 13.1 miles as we again raised over $1200 for ARL. Year three brought yet even more amazing support from friends, family, co-workers, vendors, suppliers, and even strangers as we hit $1460 in total donations! That helped me pull through in what turned out to be my toughest half yet, but knowing all the amazing support I had made it well worth it. Year four again brought fantastic support, and I was able to raise my largest amount yet, $1515! The race itself while not nearly my fastest, was my most enjoyable experience since the first. Year 5 brought together another kilt-tastic group of amazing donors and support, and we raised over another $1200 for the newly formed Humane Animal Rescue partnership between the Humane Society and Animal Rescue League. Double bonus of last year's race as I was able to run with my brother-in-law Dave and again had another amazing experience.
Of course knowing our now 5 year total was at an incredible $6,697 made all the effort and sweat and pain all the more than worthwhile. So thank you to all of you who have given so graciously the last 5 years!
And that of course brings us back to now, and I need your help once again to make an impact in the lives of a variety of furry friends at HAR. It's amazing to me that this will be the sixth time for me to run, but equally amazing and humbling has been all the support I have received over the last four years. Your donations greatly help motivate me to keep going and push through training, and certainly help come race day. And just like the last five years, if we hit $1000 in total donations I will proudly run the half in my kilt!
Here are some of the ways HAR will use the funds you contribute:
$30 will cover the cost of micro-chipping a cat or dog.
$50 will provide low-cost spay/neuter services to a family who couldn’t otherwise afford it.
$100 will provide behavioral training for an animal to help her find a new home more quickly.
$1,000 will cover the total care for an animal that stays in our shelter for one month.
No matter the donation amount, thank you very much for your help and support! Even more than just the care your donation will help provide, it also helps bring smiles and joy to the family who ends up adopting the animal your donation helped save.
