PAWTeam is the Portland Animal Welfare Team, centered in Portland, Oregon. This one of a kind organization provides veterinary services for the animals of people who are homeless, in transitional housing or living below the poverty line. Clinics are held the first Sunday of every month where volunteers provide veterinary services, including preventive care, vaccinations, spay/neuter assistance, grooming, referrals for surgery. With donated time, supplies and energy, it has been estimated that animals are able to be treated, vaccinated and groomed for about $25.00 each. This goal of $25,000.00 would fund these clinics for a year, providing care and comfort for about 85 animals a month.
PAWTeam (www.pawteam.org) came into being when friends, all veterinarians, decided to assist the growing homeless population in Portland, Oregon and took to the streets to assist their animals as they could. For many of the homeless, their animal might be their only companion and often their animal would receive care and food first. In order to help this fragile population further, space has been secured in a former industrial building where clinics can be held once a month and provisions can be donated and stored. The relentless energy of the Board and Executive Director, and the most organized office manager ever, have made it possible for this organization to expand and reach out to even domestic violence shelters, where one's animals may have been equally as abused as the people. Being able to provide dignity and respect to people who, for whatever reason, have ended up in poverty often helps them to be able to find the resources they need to end the cycle.
I have seen the dedication and heart of the volunteers of PAWTeam. Money is used wisely and effectively and it's truly a labor of love for animals and those who have been affected by life's sometimes harsh circumstances. Volunteers come once a month to a space that just recently has working plumbing and is cold in winter and hot in summer, payment being a hot dog lunch and knowing that every dollar is being used to treat the animals.
Any amount raised would be fantastic (oh, and it's tax deductible too). Do you need more incentive to donate to this awesome cause? I will personally deliver or overnight a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies to the five largest donations received. :-)
The challenge starts Tuesday morning, 11 am EST / 8 am PST and lasts until midnight. Please come back and donate!
