Paying it Forward in Africa
Organized by: Mariah Farley
My name is Mariah. I am from New Jersey, USA. I am currently living in Singapore. I moved here under the circumstances of an incredible second chance. About five years ago, I sought out medical attention for chronic migraines. Unknown to me, the doctor I saw was running what is commonly referred to as a "pill mill" (a doctor's office that freely writes prescription narcotics in for finical gain). The doctor wrote me a prescription for a strong narcotic pain killer, and before I knew it I was addicted. In the years following my drug addiction spun out of control and I began using stronger street drugs like heroin. After a few failed attempts in detox programs, I was given the opportunity to escape my life and move to Singapore, so I took it. I have been clean ever since. The fact that I got a second chance, when so many that are in the situation I was in don't, was very enlightening. It is now my goal in life to help in anyway I can to give less fortunate people second chances. The children in the orphanages will have a second chance at life and a better chance at getting a higher education if they can speak, read and write in english. The program that I am hoping to work with give volunteers the opportunity to teach the children just that. The organisation does require that a program fee be paid in order to help buy the supplies needed for the children. Any help that I can get towards this cause will be deeply appreciated! Any extra money raised will be donated to GVI.
