BENEFITING: EPIPHANY MAGAZINE INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 07, 2014
In our 12 years of existence Epiphany has never paid a writer for their work save for Nobel Prize winner Derek Walcott and a handful of hired translators. Shameful, and yet it is the sad truth for most literary journals. For us subscriptions, donations and grants pay for one staff person, the printing of the journal and the many other expenses associated with running a small arts organization. In our hearts and in our minds, we know that artists deserve to be paid for their work. Epiphany has done exceptionally well on the editorial side. One standout example is Domingo Martinez who received serious recognition from the three chapters we published excerpted from his memoir The Boy Kings of Texas, which eventually led to a book contract. Domingo’s book was a finalist for The National Book Award in 2012. While this fact may validate Epiphany's existence it does not put money in the artists' pockets. In the upcoming issue, Risky Words #14, we have 67 contributors -- some of whom have taken significant personal and political risks to publish their work. It has always been our goal to pay the writers and this is a start. We hope you will join us in this campaign of recognition of talent and courage. All the money raised here will go directly to the writers. Epiphany is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, therefore all contributions are tax deductible.
