Local hunger is a problem that I would like to change. I am constantly running into people on the streets who ask for food or money and I am always there to run into the nearest restaurant and fetch them whatever I can or giving them a dollar or two. It is only the perfect coincidence I end up in a class where I am assigned to change the world. A study done in Asheville, NC in 2011 showed that 23.8% of people didn't have enough money for food when they needed it. That's nearly 1/4 of our population here. In 2009, the percentage of population below poverty rate was at 24.7%. Based off of the poverty level, you can only assume how many of those people are in need of a meal here and there. Not to mention 29.2% of kids are below the poverty level, I'm sure they'd love to enjoy a nice pb&j sandwich. And I hope to be the one that hands it to them.
PB&J for the People will be a non-profit that provides sandwiches and a drink to people on the streets and potentially donations to local shelters each week. My goal for the semester is to feed a minimum of 200 people. I would like to carry on this project past the semester and make it a weekly promise to those who are hungry to provide a meal at least once a week. Supplies are a low cost, so please no huge donations just yet. I am beyond excited to be doing this project and thank you all for your support.
