EVENT DATE: Jun 18, 2012
I have been blessed with the opportunity to go to Nicaragua on a mission trip for the third year in a row. I went with my school for the first time after my sophomore year of high school. I realized my passion was to serve these people, so last year, I spent a month serving in Nicaragua. This year, I am going with my church. My youth group has never been on a mission trip as a group. I decided that I would like to organize and lead a trip to Nicaragua for the youth! We are only in the planning and fundraising stages, but it has already been a huge learning experience.
We are traveling to Managua, Nicaragua to help the people of La Chureca. La Chureca is the city dump. It is home to all of Managua's trash and 1500 people. The people scavenge through the trash to find food to eat or something of value to sell. When the trash trucks come, all the people line up. They want to be first in line, so that they can have the best selection of trash. To get further up in line, parents will sell their daughters to the trash men. Last year, I saw a truck driving away with a little girl no more than 8 years old riding in the truck with the men. It was heart breaking. I had to watch that girl drive away knowing exactly what was going to happen. There was nothing I could do. It made me so angry that the girls thought it was NORMAL to be raped on a daily basis by their fathers, their neighbors, the trash men or any man that wanted to. It lit a fire in me that will never dim. It is my passion to help these people feel the love and the hope that can only be found in Jesus Christ.
There are several organizations that go to La Chureca and give the people food and clothes. I, of course, always bring toys and clothing for the children, but that is not the mission of our trip. As Christians, we are called to spread the gospel to everyone. Our trip will be focused on building relationships with the people we meet. Our goal is to show them a glimpse of the love Jesus has for them.
I am hopeful that you will partner with my team and me through your prayers for effectiveness, protection and transformation in our lives. If you feel led, we also need financial support. We are working to raise $40,000 as a group to cover the expense of the airfare, food, lodging, in-country transportation, and ministry supplies. In light of this current economic environment, we trust the Lord will provide the necessary finances for our team. Thank you so much for your consideration in partnering with me through prayer and/or finances.
A trip like this is challenging and worthwhile in so many ways. We are blessed by God so that we will bless others. I am excited to have you as a ministry partner in this endeavor.
