PCD, primary ciliary dyskinesia, is an inherited disorder of motile (moving) cilia. It is a chronic, progressive, incurable genetic disease. PCD presents itself through an array of conditions including organ displacement, chronic infections of the respiratory tract, sinuses and ears, hearing loss, cardiac defects and infertility. Chronic pulmonary infections resulting in permanent lung damage will affect 100% of patients by adulthood. These difficult to treat infections lead to progressive lung disease, respiratory failure, lung transplantation and, in some cases, premature death.
PCD begins at birth and lasts a lifetime. 25,000 Americans with PCD will never take a normal breath. Please support the PCD Foundation in our mission to find a cure for PCD.
