Dear Mississippi Community or Business Leader:
I am writing to ask you to join with other committed educators, community organizations, and dedicated county officials in McComb, Mississippi and the greater Pike County to support the upcoming Pike County Homecoming Scholarship Weekend 2013 (The PCHS Weekend 2013) geared toward improving high school graduation rates and those graduates who go on to pursue higher education degrees. As you may know, there are few positive activities outside the classroom setting that leaves too many of our youth victims to gangs, drug usage, and illicit behavior, while concurrently doing poor in school. Mississippi’s average high school graduation rate is 62% while McComb High School’s is 55%.
From April 11, 2013 to April 14, 2013, The PCHS Weekend 2013 will impact the youth in Pike County with cultural, uplifting, and educational events, enlighten the youth in the Pike County area about certain topics that affect them directly (Youth Violence, AIDS/STD Awareness, Teen Pregnancy, etc.), introduce creative outlets that will inspire them to explore their own God-given talents, and teach the importance of community service so that they will aspire to make a difference in their own communities and ultimately the world. This weekend of events will also create a liaison between Pike County high school students and, but not limited to, students and administrators from colleges and universities in Mississippi. The overall goal of this weekend of events is to impact the lives of the next generation of young people and to mold them into future leaders.
Please see the next page for the schedule of events. We have already confirmed the locations of the different events and the various performers, and so our only deficit is the financial support. This is an extremely important topic to us, and we want to ensure that as many events and provided food can be free for the community due to its current economic status. Our estimate cost is $15,000 for the whole weekend.
Can we count on you to help us initiate an annual and invaluable weekend for a community in great need? Keep in mind that book scholarships will be given out to McComb, North Pike, and South Pike high school seniors! And trust me, as a recent college graduate, any help is a blessing! We understand finances might be tight, but any service donations of any kind would also be much appreciated, i.e. tents, transportation, food, sponsorship, monetary donations, tuxedos/dresses for the pageant contestants, school supplies, decorations, etc!
We know that if we work together, we’ll be able to make a huge impact for the youth of Pike County!
