Peace and Education Coalition Coalition - Back of the Yards, New City's mission has been to use education as a way to reduce and prevent violence on the south side of Chicago. Poverty is very prevalent in the neighborhood and presents significant challenges to the residents, especially the youth. For 19 years, we have worked as a collaborative stakeholder group that raises funds to support our youth through youth programming and our Scholarship program. This year, we are launching our new PeaceWorks Youth Initiative, which is why we're on Crowdrise!
Help us provide part-time employment opportunities to the teenagers who reside in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago. Help us continue to bring peace to Chicago through a vibrant work and mentoring program. Your donation, however large or small, will make a difference in the lives of the teenagers we serve. $10.00 puts a young person to work for one hour. $100.00 gives a young person a part-time job for one week. $1,000.00 keeps a young person employed for an entire summer. Please consider a gift to support PeaceWorks, no matter the size.
We know that when young people have opportunities to engage with their community in meaningful internships and work experiences, not only do we help bring much needed financial resources to their families, we see a positive impact in our community. Youth who work part-time are more likely to avoid criminal activity, more likely to graduate high school, and better equipped to handle college, career and life.
Through our alternative high school's internship program, we have seen the incredible transformation of our community's high school youth. The Peace and Education Coalition Accelerated High School has successfully employed 70+ students in part-time paid internships for the past three school years. These internships have allowed students to earn additional high school credits, service learning hours, and a small stipend. Additionally, all students have improved their attendance to school and several have accelerated their path towards graduation.
We are committed to supporting the continuation of the internship program for our alternative high school students, as well as to expanding the program so that all of our community's high school age youth will have an opportunity to apply and participate. Help us with the PeaceWorks Youth Initiative and help us reduce violence and positively impact the high school graduation rate in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
The PEC uses its partnerships to collaborate and maximize all grant and contribution dollars. Since its inception the PEC has been an all-volunteer organization with very little overhead. Therefore, all the money that is raised for scholarship or youth programming is used for that stated purpose only. The Board of Directors do not receive compensation for their efforts.
The PEC currently has 11 schools, 3 local parishes, law enforcement, elected officials and over 40 different non-profit agencies as members. Our work has been recognized on a city, state, and national level.
The mission of the Peace and Education Coalition (PEC) is to foster relationships between local community stakeholders. The Coalition members work to create a united vision to help neighborhood children, especially those trapped in a cycle of poverty and violence. The Coalition serves at-risk and high-risk youth by promoting peace and education in the Back of the Yards, New City community. We strive to guide our children with hope, a future and opportunities to reach their potential.
