THE STORY:

Pearl and Crystal are four and a half year-old twin sisters. They are lively, cheerful girls, and full of hope for the future. They were abandoned at birth after being diagnosed with a congenital disorder that affects their sight. Both girls suffer from a rare genetic eye disease called Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy (FEVr). They were eventually taken in by the Charity House in Jiangxi Province. It was at the Charity House that these girls found their forever family with Mr. and Mrs. Chen from Shanghai. The Chen's, who are retired now, adopted the girls and brought them home to Shanghai in 2012. Soon, the Chen's recognized the girls needed extra medical attention, and in early 2013 they began seeking additional medical consultation and treatment for Pearl and Crystal at Shanghai's leading hospitals. However, domestic authorities in ophthalmology explained it would be almost impossible to treat the degenerative disease, and Pearl almost is blind now. Mr. Chen and his wife have raised both children with dedication and love, and want both girls to have the same opportunities in life. If Pearl loses her sight completely, the twins cannot attend kindergarten together and won't be able to grow up together—but this doesn't have to be the case, there is a chance Pearl's blindness can be reversed and that Crystal's can be prevented. In February of 2016, Dr. Handa MD, an ophthalmologist at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, examined Pearl and Crystal. He confirmed that Pearl had highly developed FEVr and needed a timely surgery or she would risk total blindness. He also confirmed that Crystal had severe myopia and needed to be examined for symptoms of EEVr. Failure to peruse treatment means Pearl faces the immediate danger of blindness, and Crystal will have the same fate later. Both of these girls have already faced immense hardship, and but are now fortunate to be with a family committed to bringing them the best life possible. With your help we can make sure these girls have bright futures ahead of them! Expense Summary -- Surgery budget of Pearl :RMB 410,000/USD 63,077 -- Medical expenses of Crystal: RMB 90,000/USD 13,846 -- Total: RMB 500,000/USD 76,923
